A Woman’s Guide to Life After Menopause

Menopause, which occurs when a woman’s menstrual cycle stops after a 12-month period, can happen when a person reaches 40 or 50 years of age. On average, women in the United States experience menopause at 52 years of age. However, it’s possible for women to have premature menopause, or menopause that occurs before the age of 40, if they have had their uterus and/or ovaries surgically removed, have autoimmune disorders, or a history of smoking, among others.

What are menopause symptoms?

Though menopause is a natural part of biological aging, many women are not aware of how it is diagnosed or of its symptoms. According to Bonafide’s “State of Menopause Study,” 29% of women “never sought information about menopause before they experienced it.” 34% of women who took part in this study are experiencing menopause symptoms but are currently undiagnosed, while 20% of women have experienced menopause symptoms for more than a year before being formally diagnosed.

During perimenopause, or the period preceding menopause, women will typically experience some, many, or all of following menopause signs and symptoms:

Irregular periods

Your flow might become lighter or light some days, and heavy on others. You might also skip periods.

Vaginal dryness

This may be due to lower estrogen levels, which is a hormone responsible for the vagina’s lubrication, elasticity, and thickness.

Hot flashes

This includes a sudden feeling of warmth that spreads through your chest, neck, and face, a rapid heartbeat, perspiration, and feelings of anxiety. This can last for one to five minutes.

Mood changes

Because of hormonal changes, you might experience feelings of anger and sadness. You might also have trouble concentrating, feel anxious, or fatigued.

Weight gain

Hormonal changes can also affect your metabolism and cause you to gain weight especially in your abdomen, hips, and thighs.

Thinning hair and dry skin

When estrogen and progesterone levels decrease, you might experience thinning hair and dry, thin skin.

Talk to your doctor if you’re experiencing any or all of the previously mentioned signs and symptoms.

Can menopause symptoms be treated?

Although menopause has no medical treatment, there are available treatments that can help alleviate certain menopause symptoms.

Take note that different women require different forms of treatment. You should work with your doctor to know what kind of treatment would work best for you, and make sure that you review your treatment options regularly if not yearly.

The following are common treatments for menopause symptoms:

  • Low-dose hormonal birth control. During perimenopause, you might sometimes experience irregular periods and even heavier flow. Birth control pills can help regulate periods and lessen menstrual flow. However, it should be noted that hormonal birth control should not be taken by women who smoke, as it increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases in women aged 35 and above.

  • Vaginal moisturizers and lubricants. To relieve itchiness, dryness, pain (especially during intercourse), and reduce the risk of vaginal infection, you can apply vaginal moisturizers every few days and vaginal lubricants during sexual activity.

  • Hormone therapy (HT). This is used to increase hormone levels (estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progestin, also referred to as EPT) to help relieve some menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and itchy skin. It can also decrease the chances of developing osteoporosis, colon cancer, diabetes, and joint pain. It can improve mood and mental well-being, too. However, HT also comes with certain risks, including an increased chance of developing endometrial cancer, gallstones, breast cancer, and blood clots. Women who have had a history of cancer or have abnormal bleeding, among others, should not have HT.

  • Non-HT medications such as Gabapentin and Clonidine. These medications can help relieve hot flashes and night sweats in women who can’t or choose not to go for HT.

Are there lifestyle changes that women can do to alleviate menopause symptoms?

The following are some important lifestyle changes that women can do to relieve menopause symptoms that do not require medication:

  • Go for healthier food options. Limit your consumption of processed foods and go for a diet rich in healthy fats, protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables, and fiber.

  • Avoid alcohol, too much caffeine, and spicy foods. These can make hot flashes and night sweats feel worse.

  • Incorporate strength-training, aerobics, stability, balance, and flexibility exercises in your daily living. Regularly exercising can help you relieve stress and maintain a healthy weight. Research shows that obese women experience hot flashes more frequently than thinner women, thus, maintaining a healthy weight can help alleviate hot flashes and night sweats in menopausal and postmenopausal women.

  • Dress in light, layered clothing. In doing so, when you experience a hot flash, you can easily remove articles of clothing and put them back on at a later time.

Monkeypox Overview:
What It Is, Who’s At Risk, and What You Need to Know

What is monkeypox?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox is transmitted from animals, such as rodents, squirrels, and primates, to humans. Cases are most commonly seen in central and west Africa, especially in places near tropical rainforests.

Who are at risk of contracting monkeypox?

  • Immunucompromised individuals or people with severe diseases
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Older individuals
  • Children eight years and younger
  • People who eat improperly or inadequately cooked meat and other animal products of monkeypox-infected animals
  • Those who live in or near tropical rainforests that house monkeypox-infected animals
  • Those who may be exposed to or live near infected animals
  • Health workers who are treating people infected with monkeypox
  • Household members of people infected with monkeypox

How can human-to-human monkeypox transmission occur?

Monkeypox can be transmitted via close physical contact with monkeypox-infected humans via respiratory secretions, skin lesions, and even respiratory droplets by means of prolonged face-to-face contact.

What are the signs and symptoms of monkeypox?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that monkeypox symptoms resemble that of a milder case of smallpox. However, the difference is that those who have monkeypox have swollen lymph nodes.

Monkeypox symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and back pain, rashes, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion. It usually takes 7 to 14 days for monkeypox symptoms to apear from the time of infection.

How long does monkeypox last?

Typically, monkeypox lasts for two to four weeks.

Is there a vaccine for monkeypox?

Currently, the CDC, recommends Jynneos — a two-dose vaccined that has been approved by the FDA since 2019. It helps prevent monkeypox in people 18 and older. ACAM2000 is another vaccine option for monkeypox prevention. However, it is known to have serious side effects, including vomiting, shortness of breath, diarrhea, and constipation.

Aside from getting vaccinated, how can you prevent yourself from getting sick with monkeypox?

The CDC recommends the following steps to take to avoid becoming ill from monkeypox:

  • Isolate a monkeypox patient from immunocompromised individuals or anyone who could be at risk of contracting the virus.
  • If you are caring for a monkeypox patient, wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and practice good hand hygiene.
  • Wear PPE  when washing soiled materials such as bedding, towels, and clothes of a monkeypox patient.
  • Avoid contact with animals who could be carriers of the virus.

Living and Caring:
Improving Patient and Caregiver Quality of Life with Respite care

Living and Caring: Improving patient and caregiver quality of life with respite care.

Our population is undeniably aging. According to an Urban Institute study, the number of Americans ages 65 and older will reach 80 million by 2040 — this means that 1 in 5 people will be 65 years and older and that older adults who are 85 years and older will nearly quadruple between 2000 and 2040.

And as the nation ages, there is a great need for caregivers. And the majority of primary caregivers are family members, who are oftentimes juggling full-time work with caregiving tasks. One of the 40.4 million caregivers in the US — 9 out of 10 of which are family members providing care to older loved ones — is Karla, who is caring for her 83-year-old mother.

“Being the primary caregiver for my mom is what I personally wanted to do, especially since my dad passed away in 2018. We’ve always been a tight-knit family and I’m more than happy to be able to care for my mom in this capacity,” Karla remarked.

Karla describes herself as someone who simply wants to be on top of things. She enjoys caring for her mother while working for an advertising company and caring for her teenage daughter. However, she admits that it is a huge responsibility.

“I’m very fortunate because I’m able to work from home; it’s easier for me to be there for my mom when she needs me. But I must admit that it can be very stressful at times. Sometimes, you’d crave for a bit of me-time but you just have too much to do. And when I’m stressed, exhausted, or even sick, I know I’m not going to be able to give the care that my mom needs and quite frankly deserves,” she shared.

For individuals like Karla who prefer to keep their older loved ones at home and care for them but need some time for themselves to rest, relax, or tend to other tasks, respite care can help. Respite care provides a short-term break for primary caregivers by assigning or transferring caregiving tasks to another caregiver. Respite care can be done in a person’s home or at a respite care facility.

The benefits of respite care for primary caregivers and patients

  • Caregivers can get a much-deserved break and peace of mind.
Caregiver burnout, which is the mental, emotional, and physical fatigue, can happen when primary caregivers overextend themselves. With respite care services, primary caregivers can have several hours a day of rest, allowing them to also care for themselves.

    With a professional caregiver
“When we started getting respite care for my mom, I was able to go back to a few hobbies I really enjoyed and helped me relax. I had time to journal and crochet again. I really started feeling better, which in turn, made me become more cheerful when I’m with my mom,” said Karla.

Primary caregivers can also leave the house for errands, exercise, or even a vacation and have peace of mind that their loved ones are being cared for properly.

  • Patients can get flexible and professional care.
Having a professional caregiver come to provide home care services to older individuals have many benefits. They are experienced in caring for patients with challenging conditions such as Alzheimer’s or parkinson’s disease. With respite care services, patients can have caregivers who will take care of them for a matter of hours or even round-the-clock, depending on the patients’ needs. Patients can also get care right at at home, allowing them to do their daily routines at a comfortable and familiar location.

  • Both patients and caregivers can have more social interaction and try new activities.
With respite care services, patients can meet new caring individuals with whom they can build new social and emotional connections, while primary caregivers can reconnect with friends and colleagues. Home health aides can also influence patients to try new activities that would benefit their physical, mental, and psychological health.

Depending on a patient’s health, a home health aide can help him or her explore new activities such as playing new games, going to different parks or museums, or listening to music. “It’s amazing just how my mom and Marge, her home health aide, clicked. Marge is a godsend — through her friendship and expert caring, my mom discovered new things about herself that she didn’t know. She’s taken a liking for plums and card games. She’s blossoming into a more happy individual, and it’s been wonderful,” Karla stated.

Happy lives with HHAs: How to help the elderly with lonelines

Even before Covid-19 wreaked havoc around the world, the aging population has been battling these two pressing health risks. And the global pandemic has worsened the situation for a significant number of older individuals in the United States. “Older individuals have felt the blow of the physical distancing guidelines and lockdowns that were implemented especially in 2020,” shared Bryan Estranero, PSS Home Care’s Business Development Manager. “Aside from helping older individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), home health aides (HHAs) can also help the elderly with loneliness. They provide the mental, emotional, and social support that they need to live healthier and happier lives at home. This is exactly what happened with one of our clients and our hardworking HHA, Joseph,” remarked Bryan.

The story of a lonely older adult

Erratic. This was the word Mark used to describe his father’s sleeping patterns. “He told me that he would stay in bed for hours, but actually just get about a couple of hours of quality sleep in. This is probably why he was so exhausted in the morning. Whenever I’d call to check in on him, he’d be so cranky,” Mark shared. Aside from disrupted sleep, his father, who lived alone in New York, was taking less of his calls. “When he did pick up, our conversations would be short. He was curt and disengaged,” shared Mark.

It turns out that Mark’s father was battling something that plagues the lives of millions of older individuals, especially during the pandemic — loneliness and social isolation. Even before Covid-19 wreaked havoc around the world, the aging population has been battling these two pressing health risks. And the global pandemic has worsened the situation for a significant number of older individuals in the United States.

What is loneliness?

Loneliness is the feeling of being alone — even if a person has regular social contact with friends, companions, or family members.

What is social isolation?

Social isolation refers to a lack of social connections. Older individuals can experience social isolation due to various reasons, including the deaths of spouses and friends, disability, and illness.

What are the health risks associated with loneliness and social isolation?

Loneliness and social isolation can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, and even death, according to research.

How many Americans are experiencing loneliness and social isolation?

As of 2018, 35% or approximately 47.9 million US adults aged 45 and older are experiencing loneliness.

Loneliness by the numbers

According to a 2018 survey conducted by the AARP:

0 %

51% of midlife and older adults who consider their health to be fair or poor are lonely.

0 %

Having a sleep disorder is linked to loneliness. 42% of older adults diagnosed with a sleep disorder are lonely.

0 %

47% of adults who lost their spouses or partners in the last five years are lonely.

0 %

40% of adults who smoke or use tobacco are more likely to be lonely from those who abstain from smoking.

“The pandemic has really magnified loneliness and social isolation in older individuals. Older individuals have felt the blow of the physical distancing guidelines and lockdowns that were implemented especially in 2020. The loneliness has affected their mental, physical, and emotional health, something that was apparent especially in our new clients,” shared Bryan Estranero, PSS Home Care’s Business Development Manager.

“Aside from helping older individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), home health aides (HHAs) can also help them with the mental, emotional, and social support that they need to live healthier and happier lives at home. This is exactly what happened with Mark’s father and our hardworking HHA, Joseph,” remarked Bryan.

Keeping loneliness, isolation at bay: How HHAs help the elderly with loneliness

Home health aides can help
older individuals live healthier lives.

HHAs can help older individuals live healthier. Studies have shown how regular exercise, a healthy diet, and enough sleep can do wonders for one’s health. After all, endorphin boosts from exercise can instantly elevate mood and make people happy. “He’s been relatively more calm, more relaxed, and happier. Joseph, my dad’s HHA, is helping him get daily exercises and has been cooking healthier meals for him. He’s cut down on junk food and it shows,” said Mark.

Home health aides can help older individuals maintain an active social life.

From driving older individuals to local parks, accompanying them to interesting group activities such as book club or gardening club, or simply enjoying fun activities at home, home health aides can help older individuals keep connected with friends, old and new.

“Joseph has been bringing my dad to the local park. He loves playing chess, and it’s nice to see that he’s begun playing again and has met new people, too. In the beginning, it was so difficult to bring him out of the house, but now, he can’t wait to go, especially since the weather’s been so nice,” remarked Mark.

“He also drives my dad to his best friend’s house once a week. They have coffee together, something that they haven’t done in a while. It’s something that he has missed doing and he’s been so happy about it,” he added.

Home health aides can help older individuals navigate technology.

Tech savvy HHAs can help older individuals discover the online world. They can go online to connect or videochat with their friends and loved ones, learn new things by enrolling in classes, and find new ways to entertain themselves such as by watching videos on YouTube.

“It’s been nice to see my dad more often, even though I live three hours away. Joseph helps him FaceTime with me, and I’m glad to see how happy and healthy he looks. He’s been more engaged lately, which is a welcome change from how he was when he was alone. He also asks Joseph to pull up YouTube videos of chess matches so he can beat his friends, he says, so that’s been really funny, too” Mark shared.

Caring is our Culture

Helping the elderly with loneliness and social isolation is but one of the many benefits of having a skilled and compassionate HHA.

At PSS Home Care, we provide top-notch assistance to older adults, as well as people living with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or cognitive impairments. Our home health aides help our clients with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and grooming, among many others. Waiting for Help:
Shortage of Home Care Workers Leaves Older Americans Waiting for Assistance

Waiting for help: Shortage of home care workers leaves older americans waiting for assistance.

The American population is aging. According to the Census bureau, by 2060, the number of Americans ages 65 and older will nearly double — from 52 million in 2018 to a whopping 95 million by 2060.

In New York, older individuals with ages 65 and older, make up about 13% of the population. NYC Health reports that New Yorkers are living longer and the number of older individuals in the city is expected to exceed 1.4 million by 2040 — a growth of 41% from 2010.

As more Americans age, the need for regular home care assistance is all the more highlighted. However, the aging population is battling a crisis that leaves them vulnerable and waiting for assistance — a shortage of home care workers.

“Before our latest client reached out to us, she has been awaiting home care assistance for close to two months,” remarked Bryan Estranero, PSS Home Care’s Business Development Manager. “For the past several weeks, she’s been living alone with no home care help. Some helpful neighbors helped her with groceries and lawnwork, but she hasn’t been able to do other activities such as bathing, doctor’s appointments, and running errands.”

The shortage of home health aides is a major blow to the lives of older individuals all over the country. In order to keep living independent and fulfilled lives at the comfort of their homes, older adults need to have the assistance that they require — such as cooking meals or going to doctor’s appointments.

“The shortage of home care workers couldn’t have come at a worse possible time — the pandemic is making the lives of older individuals even more challenging than ever. Home health aides provide critical support; they provide assistance with older individuals’ daily needs and help keep them protected against Covid-19,” remarked Bryan.

The short supply of home care workers might prompt older individuals or their loved ones to opt for nursing homes instead of at-home care. Unfortunately, reports have shown concerns in nursing home environments that include extreme weight loss, dehydration, untreated bedsores, inadequate hygiene, and mental and physical decline.

These kinds of environments put older individuals at risk for elder abuse. In a report, 92.2 per 1,000 older adults ages 60 and older in New York City experienced abuse.

Caring is our Culture

“We immediately sent a trusted home health aide with our company nurse to our client’s home. The first thing we did was assess her health and her current situation. There was so much that needed to be done, but the first order of business was fixing her a healthy, filling meal, which she just really appreciated,” Bryan shared.

At PSS Home Care, we provide top-notch assistance to older adults, as well as people living with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or cognitive impairments. Our home health aides help our clients with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and grooming, among many others. They also prepare healthy meals and oversee the administration of prescribed medication. These and more are what make PSS Home Care’s brand of compassionate care exceptional.

We are also regularly hiring and training skilled, professional, and compassionate home health aides to become part of our caring team and to help as many older individuals in need as we can. Strengthen Muscles, Avoid Falls:

Why Older Individuals Need Exercise, Proper Diet in the Age of Covid-19

Strengthen muscles, avoid falls

One of Mrs. Baker’s favorite activities is strolling down the park near her home. “She always looks forward to her afternoon walks. Every day at 5 in the afternoon, especially when the weather’s nice, she’ll be out walking,” shared her daughter, Callie.

But when the pandemic hit, Mrs. Baker, like most of the older population the world over, was asked to spend most of her time at home.

“Back then, she was living alone. She wasn’t able to walk outside anymore, and that really took a toll on her health. During our calls, I started noticing that she just wasn’t as chipper as she used to be, too,” Callie said.

The Covid-19 pandemic has effectively forced people all over the world to press pause on their regular activities. During the global health crisis, people have been encouraged to stay indoors to avoid contracting and spreading the disease. For a while, gyms and fitness centers in different parts of the world had to temporarily close their doors, as only essential businesses were allowed to operate.

People stayed at home to stay protected against Covid-19, but in doing so for long periods of time, their physical activities lessened and their sedentary behaviors increased. This, together with dietary changes, can lead to sarcopenia or the loss of muscle mass and the reduction of muscle strength in older individuals.

“After a while, my mom told us how weak she felt. She had trouble going up and down the stairs. There was even one time when she almost fell when she got up from bed. We had her seen by her doctor and after some tests, we found out that she had sarcopenia. That’s when we got her home care assistance. We found out too late that she hadn’t been eating healthily and that she was barely moving at home,” stated Callie.

Dr. Ayam De Leon, PT, DPT, co-founder and owner of Ossining Physical Therapy, states that sarcopenia is not strictly a Covid-19 phenomenon. “The loss of muscle mass and strength is part of the aging process. It’s been around even before the pandemic hit, but the lockdowns and quarantines have really affected the level of physical activity for everyone, especially older individuals. The numbers weren’t great for older individuals before the pandemic started, and now it’s more concerning,” he shared.

4 facts about sarcopenia

Combating Sarcopenia with Exercise

Currently, there is no FDA-approved pharmaceutical drug to treat sarcopenia. However, a person who has sarcopenia — or a person who is at risk of developing it — can still improve his or her muscle mass and strength through regular physical activity and a proper diet.

“Resistance training works best in combating and preventing sarcopenia in older individuals,” said Ayam. Resistance training involves exercises that are designed to enhance muscular fitness using weights, resistance bands, or a person’s own body weight.

“These exercises also boost balance, coordination, and mobility levels in older individuals, which reduces the risk of falling. It also keeps them living independently,” Ayam added.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity in a week for older individuals aged 65 and over. They also advise that exercises that can help prevent falls and improve balance must be done three or more days in a week, while muscle-strengthening activities must be done two or more days in a week.

“Aside from improving muscle mass and strength, regular physical activity can do wonders for other health issues, too, such as obesity, arthritis, and even heart ailments,” said Ayam.

List of things to know before you go on an exercise.

Examples of resistance training exercises for older adults include:

  • Squats
  • Stretches
  • Knee lifts with med ball
  • Lat pull with resistance band
  • Wall push-ups
  • Toe stands
  • Bicep curls
  • Overhead presses
  • Knee extensions

The Other Half of the Equation: A Proper Diet

Regular exercise needs to be paired with a proper diet. Studies show that a protein-deficient diet is associated with muscular decline in older individuals. In fact, a 2017 report states that older individuals who ate the least amount of protein were almost twice as likely to experience walking or climbing difficulties.

Protein, the building block of muscles, is integral to muscular health — and older individuals need to get enough protein regularly.  Older adults with sarcopenia need 1.2 to 1.5 g/kg of protein per day. And though protein comes in all shapes and sizes, it’s important to get it from good sources.

List of Protein-rich foods for older adults

“When we work out and exercise to strengthen our muscles, it’s important to have enough protein in our system. Protein is also good for keeping off weight and lowering blood pressure,” remarked Ayam.

“Regular physical activity coupled with a healthy diet is crucial to keeping older individuals healthy and active,” added Ayam.

Families can also explore going for home care services to make sure that their older loved ones are exercising regularly and eating well at home. “It’s been great. My mom’s now able to take her walks in the park, and needless to say, she just loves that. And now, someone’s always accompanying her, making sure that she’s safe. She’s been gushing about her meals, too, which is just wonderful. I’m just really happy with the attention and care that she’s getting,” remarked Callie.

Know the Signs: How to Determine if Your Aging Parents Need Help

Determining whether one’s parents require help taking care of themselves or otherwise is life-changing — and sometimes, even life-saving. For John, a father of two from Long Island, it was both.

“We visit my mom twice a month. It’s a 30-minute drive to her house and she has kind neighbors that we’re also good friends with,” said John.

“My mom has always been independent. But recently, I started noticing some troubling signs that she needed someone to be with her. The last straw was when she took a nap and forgot that the stove was on — she was heating leftovers. Thank God she was able to come to when she smelled the smoke and called a neighbor to help her out. After that close call, we decided to immediately just talk to her about getting her the help that she needed. She’s now able to live comfortably at home and I’m less anxious,” he shared.

Knowing when to seek assistance for an aging loved one can be difficult, especially when he or she lives far away. It becomes especially tough when older individuals don’t seek help on their own.

Here are some important signs to take note of in order to determine if your aging parents or loved ones need help taking care of themselves.

01.
They start neglecting themselves.

A common sign that older individuals would need help is when they begin neglecting themselves. If they are exhibiting difficulties in bathing, dressing, brushing their teeth, eating, navigating stairs, and walking around, it might be time to get home care assistance for them.

“When we visit our parents, it’s a good idea to probe a bit and check on how they are. Are they able to cut their fingernails and wash their hair properly or at all? Are they able to take their medicines regularly? These are important things to check as these will give you an idea of the kind of care your parents would need,” shared Bryan Estranero, PSS Home Care’s Business Development Manager.

02.
They are no longer able to do tasks like they used to.

Understandably, as our parents age, there are types of activities or tasks that they won’t be able to do, such as mowing the lawn. But if they start not being able to do tasks that they used to regularly do without any trouble such as dusting, washing clothes, paying the bills on time, or changing small fixtures like light bulbs, they may need help at home.

Sometimes, older individuals lose weight because they’re having a difficult time driving to the store, buying groceries, or cooking meals on their own. And though weight loss can also be attributed to other factors, such as health conditions, being able to spot this sign is key to helping address what older individuals need.

03.
They are experiencing memory, behavioral, and social changes.

When older people experience large memory gaps, such as forgetting how to go to familiar places, asking questions repeatedly, or are having trouble following simple directions, they may become prone to health and safety risks. The stage of dementia an older individual has will dictate the level of care that they require at home. It’s important to ensure that older individuals are regularly seen and assisted by their primary care physicians so that a proper treatment plan can be identified and be implemented.

“Aside from gauging your parent’s memory, it’s also important to keep tabs on his or her behaviors and social activities. If a happy and optimistic older person suddenly becomes distant, sad, or reclusive, he or she may need to be seen by a healthcare professional,” remarked Bryan.

Depression can look different for everyone. It can present as a form of a behavioral change such as being irritable, anxious, or sullen. Older individuals who are having trouble sleeping or sleeping too much may be exhibiting symptoms of depression. When you observe any of these changes in your loved ones, encourage them to see a doctor who can recommend treatment as well as home care assistance if necessary.

How to help aging parents who need help

For family members who are concerned about the health and wellbeing of their aging loved ones, voicing out concerns respectfully is key. “Have a sincere conversation with your parents about your concerns. This is crucial to helping them understand you better and them getting the level of care that they need,” remarked Bryan.

Regular visits with doctors and healthcare professionals should be made and kept. If possible, accompany your loved ones to their medical appointments and seek their permission to share your observations with their doctor.

Aging individuals can also benefit from getting home care services especially when family members don’t live nearby. “I can’t recommend home care enough to people I talk to. It’s a nice feeling knowing that your mother is living comfortably and safely at home, and someone’s with her at all times,” shared John.

Three Ways to Boost Your Immune System During the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives in many different ways, including our livelihoods, relationships, health, and safety. As of writing, 131 million Covid-19 cases have been recorded worldwide, with almost 31 million coming from the United States alone.

Despite 162 million vaccine doses having being administered in the US as of writing, Covid-19 was found to be the third-underlying cause of death in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“Even with vaccine rollouts happening nationwide and in different parts of the world, it’s vital for everyone to keep their guards up when it comes to their health,” Luisa Remponi, PSS Home Care’s Director of Patient Services. “It’s important to keep our immune systems strong to help defend against Covid-19 infections,” she added.

We list down three helpful tips to keep your immune system strong:

01.
Eat and drink well at home

It’s no secret how healthy food is crucial to strengthening the immune system. By including these vitamins and nutrients in your daily diet, you can help boost your immune system:

  • Vitamin A, which helps ensure proper immune system function. It also helps in the production and function of white blood cells that help protect the body against infectious diseases. Examples of vitamin A-rich foods include eggs, milk, spinach, carrots, red peppers, mango, papaya, and apricots.
  • Vitamin C, which helps repair tissues, ensures proper immune system function, and stimulates the formation of antibodies. Examples of vitamin C-rich foods include broccoli, dark leafy vegetables, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, red peppers, citrus fruits, papaya, guava, pineapples, and blueberries.
  • Protein, which helps fight off infections and builds and repairs tissues. Examples of protein-rich foods include legumes, tofu, green peas, snow peas, beans, rice, corn, asparagus, and quinoa.

“Good nutrition is incredibly important for a healthy body. The more unprocessed, fresh food you intake, the better your overall health will be,” remarked Luisa.

Proper hydration also plays a crucial role in keeping the body in tip-top shape. Drinking 8-10 cups of water per day will help keep your body hydrated and help stabilize your energy levels throughout the day.

Aside from eating and drinking well, it’s also a good idea to avoid eating out as much as possible. By staying at home, you reduce your risk of being exposed to people who may be carriers of the disease. This is especially risky when eating out as you have to remove your mask when you eat and drink. It’s also difficult to tell if frequently touched surfaces, such as tables, doors, and chairs, are disinfected regularly.

“Not only will eating in help you avoid getting tempted by fast food choices, fatty foods, and excessively sugary food and drinks, it will also help keep you safe from being exposed to Covid-19,” she said.

02.
Get enough exercise and sleep

Exercise is another big immune system-strengthener. In fact, a 2019 study has proven that moderate-intensity exercise contributes to lower rates of upper respiratory tract infections — which is important during a pandemic. Exercising also increases blood flow and strengthens antibodies to fight off infections.

“Exercise can be done even at home. Just doing household chores or doing resistance band exercises for a few minutes per day can help do wonders for your health,” said Luisa.

Aside from exercising the body, it’s also important to let it get enough rest. During sleep, the human body produces cytokines — a large group of proteins that help stave off infection and inflammation. To keep a healthy body, you would need to have quality sleep: ideally, seven to nine hours each night.

“Sleeping recharges our bodies — it helps us rest after a full day’s worth of activities. Not only that, but it also helps make our bodies become more resilient against different kinds of illnesses,” stated Luisa.

03.
Get proper emotional and mental health support

The pandemic is challenging — and highly stressful. All of a sudden, the whole world is in the throes of unfamiliar and anxiety-inducing situations. And stress has a direct effect on a person’s health. Stress is associated with different conditions and illnesses, such as headaches, asthma, and gastric ulcers.  Stress also suppresses the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens, making us more vulnerable to infections.

“When people are stressed, they can also become more susceptible to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse,” remarked Luisa.

“Whether you’ve been infected with Covid-19, or are socially isolated because of it, it’s vital to get proper emotional and mental health support from professionals and loved ones,” she added.

How to cope with the death of a loved one

There are many things that are inevitable in life — and death is one of them. The loss of someone dear to you can bring about deep grief and sadness, and it can be even more overwhelming at a time of a global pandemic where stress and anxiety levels are already high.

With grief comes a plethora of emotions — sadness, guilt, shock, confusion, despair, and even relief that a loved one no longer feels pain or suffering — and all these can come at different times, or even simultaneously, with varying intensities and durations.

While grieving is a process that is different for everyone, we provide some tips on how to help people mourn and process the loss of a loved one.

01.
Remember that it’s okay to take your time and process grief at your own pace.

Accepting that a loved one is gone is difficult and painful, and it’s vital to understand that it’s perfectly fine to take one’s time in doing so.

“It’s normal for everyone to have different methods in processing grief. Even the lengths of time in which grief is processed — which can be short or long — is different for all… And that is absolutely okay,” remarked Luisa Remponi, PSS Home Care’s Director of Patient Services.

“Grief is different for everyone, and it’s important to know that it’s okay to allow yourself to grieve, even in situations where death is expected due to grave illnesses,” shared Luisa.

Giving yourself enough time and space to grieve and accept the parting of a loved one is good for your wellbeing. “Don’t put pressure on yourself to move on by a certain period of time. The process of healing varies, after all. What’s important is to take the time to heal,” said Luisa.

“You should also allow yourself to feel what you feel. Remember that your emotions, no matter how complex or overwhelming they may seem, are valid,” she added.

02.
Connect with and ask for help from others.

Losing a loved one is already a complicated experience for most — but experiencing it during a global pandemic is even more difficult. With lockdowns and quarantines in effect, grief can be even more difficult when experienced in isolation. “During the pandemic, there are many people around the world who have lost loved ones without being able to say goodbye, and that makes grieving even more challenging than it already is,” shared Luisa.

Sharing how you feel or expressing your feelings is vital in being able to accept the loss of someone dear to you.

“Having the support of someone that you love and trust will make you feel that you are not alone during difficult times. I know that at the moment, this can be harder to do, but calling a good friend and expressing your feelings, whatever they may be, can make a world of a difference,” said Luisa.

Connecting with loved ones can also allow you to open up about other difficulties that may directly or indirectly be due to how you’re processing your grief. By reaching out to friends and relatives, they can get a better understanding of how you are and help you with what you may need — from everyday chores to financial assistance.

“When you’re in touch with friends and family members, you can talk to them about how you’re feeling and you can also converse with them about other things, which can provide a welcome distraction of sorts. That is also healthy for your mental and emotional wellbeing. You can also reach out to them when you feel like you need or would like to try professional counseling,” stated Luisa.

03.
Remember their impact on your life and share their story with others.

Losing loved ones shouldn’t mean forgetting about them and their story. You can share their beautiful life with others through a virtual photo album or a blog post that your friends and relatives can enjoy.

“It’s also a good idea to connect with your loved one’s friends and your family members to ask about their favorite memories or stories,” remarked Luisa.

You can also honor their lives by continuing their legacy or by taking an interest in the things that they were passionate about.

“If your loved one was a great cook, you can try cooking some of their favorite dishes to make, or if your loved one regularly volunteered time to help others, you can also try doing charity work. Doing so might also help you move forward. Who knows, you might even find a new hobby or a great advocacy to live by,” said Luisa.

04.
Take great care of yourself

While it’s perfectly fine to take your time to grieve, you should also recognize that you need to take care of yourself. “Being mindful of your health and wellbeing should never be viewed as a selfish act, especially when you’re grieving,” stated Luisa.

Here are some acts of self-love that you can do to help you feel better:

  • Go for healthy food choices. Try to consume less fastfood, chips, and sodas. If you don’t feel like you have enough appetite, never skip meals. Instead, opt for healthy drinks such as fruit smoothies and fresh juices.
  • Get moving. Exercising and staying active can help release chemicals such as endorphins, often referred to as one of the “happy hormones,” that can help bring feelings of optimism and relaxation.
  • Get enough rest. Make sure that you sleep at least 7 to 9 hours each night.
  • Practice mindfulness. Many people find strength and resilience in spirituality by meditating for a few minutes each day or reading the Bible.
  • Do things that you enjoy doing or try something new. You can find comfort in the things that you love doing or are interested in doing, such as reading novels, cultivating a small garden, or painting.
  • Seek help. Talk to a friend, a therapist, a mental health professional, or a healthcare provider about how you’re feeling or about any changes that you’ve noticed in your mental, physical, or emotional being.

Losing someone dear to you is painful, stressful, and challenging in different ways and degrees, and you should know that it’s normal to feel a wide range of emotions when grieving. Fully accepting the loss of a loved one takes time, and you have to fully allow yourself to mourn at your own pace.

“Grief is different for everyone, and it’s important to know that it’s okay to allow yourself to grieve, even in situations where death is expected due to grave illnesses,” shared Luisa.

“Just remember to give yourself enough time, compassion, and love while you go through this challenging time in your life,” she added.
